Unsurprisingly, we learned a few new things from Beyoncé and Jay-Z's HBO concert special, On The Run....
They Make Marriage Seem Awesome
How many married couples can say that they not only perform together, but also constantly revolutionize the entertainment industry? None. But how many can credit their own relationship as the source of other celebrities' love lives? Probably just Bey and Jay, as demonstrated by this tweet from Chrissy Teigen during the show: "Thank you Beyoncé for making marriage seem cool it's the only reason I said yes."
Beyoncé is Really Good at Covers
Bey obviously kills it with her own music, but she covers Justin Timberlake's part in "Holy Grail," Michael Jackson's "I Want You Back," the classic "Forever Young"... and nails all of them.
Bey May Be the Better Performer, But Jay-Z is a True Artist
There’s a reason why Jay-Z is considered one of the greatest rappers of our time. Unlike Beyoncé, whose exhilarating performances usually include tons of pyrotechnics, costume changes, and fancy dance moves, Jay-Z gets up on stage and just raps. One man, one voice, one stage… Thousands of captivated fans.
Performing Is About Fashion, Too
Running close to 15 outfits between the two of them, each new look came with different makeup for Beyoncé and very eclectic jewelry for Jay-Z.
Never Forget Bonnie and Clyde
The special was much more than a taped concert performance… it was an actual show. Going along with the theme of the entire production, the night was interspersed with pre-taped videos of the stars acting out a story line reminiscent of their first single together, "Bonnie and Clyde." The two appear as criminal lovers that are, well, on the run.
Beyoncé is Actually Superhuman…
Because she probably dances like this, even in her bedroom:
…and So Are Her Backup Dancers
These two might actually be the show’s main act. Insanity:
Although Her Latest Album Might be a Departure… Beyoncé’s Still Got SOUL
Check out her performance of "Why Don't You Love Me" (video above).
The Surfboard and the Single Ladies (and the Hand) Will Never Go Away
Bey sang all her hits and we fell in love with her again.
Beyoncé and Jay-Z Are American Royalty
They put on a mesmerizing show that goes above and beyond music. It’s not only about the work that these two produce, but about the class with which they do it all. They remind us that they're superstars because they worked hard to get here, and will continue to do so. After all, who can captivate an audience while wearing an American flag and asking, Do you really want to live forever?, as a video of Jay-Z and Blue Ivy doing push-ups is most likely crashing the Internet? Only the king and queen of American music.
