Fashion designer Thakoon Panichgul lives a quintessentially cutting-edge New York life: Chelsea pad, Soho office, dinners with celebrities and designers. When not at work on his line for Target, which debuts in December, or his newest gig designing for Hogan, he finds inspiration in the infectious excitement, energy, and occasional solitude of NYC.
6:30 A.M. Wake up in the Chelsea one-bedroom apartment I share with my partner, Russ, who’s an illustrator at Nickelodeon.
6:45 A.M. Go to the gym for 45 minutes—I had too many glasses of wine last night. Afterward, have my usual oatmeal with bananas and raisins and a cup of coffee. I check my BlackBerry, turn on the computer, and read online news.
8:35 A.M. Leave for my office on Prince and Lafayette.
9:15 A.M. Prepare for my showing tomorrow. I look at my board of samples and sketches, and make lots of lists on big Post-it pads. Peruse WWD.
9:45 A.M. Staff arrives. My designing team of five gets settled and we meet in my office. I divvy up responsibilities. My business partner and CEO, Maria Tomei Borromeo, and I run the show, even though we have a backer.
10:30 A.M. I get a second cup of coffee at Dean & Deluca.
11:00 A.M. Back in the office, I review a list of things I want to have fun with: “Crazy dress in organza.” “Gown in jacquard.” Only I can understand my cryptic notes. I keep my door closed and think.
11:30 A.M. PR office calls. Put out a fire in production for the show. A big advertising-design company brand went on in my time slot, so it’s a challenge to get models since that company will get most of them.
NOON I get hungry early, so I have a snack—PowerBar, Health Valley bars, or fresh papaya.
12:30 P.M. I run to APC, Martin Margiela, and Comme des Garçons in search of new pants to go out in this evening. I stop at Met Foods for a roast beef and provolone sandwich with olives.
1:30 P.M. Back to the office. Design and work on the Target line. Also scan the look book for the shoot with stylist Tina Chai.
3:00 P.M. An actress comes in to shop the resort collection. She’s about to leave to be on set with her husband, who’s shooting a film and needs some clothes.
4:00 P.M. We sing “Happy Birthday” to one of my employees. I get another coffee and am now wired.
6:30 P.M. Cocktails and dinner at the Little Owl in the West Village with my show producer, PR director, and business partner to unwind before tomorrow’s show. We had planned a karaoke session afterward, but they’re tired. I’m still wired. I like singing Fleetwood Mac’s “Landslide” or any Smiths song.
11:00 P.M. Head to Beatrice Inn for Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez’s party to celebrate their Proenza Schouler show. Mary-Kate Olsen says hello. The last time I saw her was at the Hotel Costes in Paris. Philip Lim, Richard Chai, and I chat.
12:30 A.M. Back home. Give treats to Max, my Hemingway cat, who has extra digits on each foot. He looks like he has big mittens on—very fashionable. Catch the weather on TV before I go to bed. Outlook: sunny for my big day.
