What did the Vinyl cast think of doing fake cocaine on set, and why did so many celebrities show up for the Vandal opening? Jeffrey Slonim has the scoop on that and more in this week's celebrity news....
Olivia Wilde, Bobby Cannavale & James Jagger Tell Us What It Was Like to Snort Fake Coke for Vinyl
A great project can take decades. Case in point: Twenty years ago, producer Mick Jagger approached director Martin Scorsese about an inside look at the New York music industry in the '70s. And on Thursday last week, HBO debuted the dynamic duo's series Vinyl.
Emily Tremaine, who plays the receptionist at American Century Records, confirmed that there was a lot of faux white powder on set.
“Yeah, vitamin E, it’s always around,” she said. “There is one scene where I deliver it from my bra.”
“It's challenging,” Bobby Cannavale, who stars as Richie Finestra, the series' oft-snorting record executive, shared. “It stuffs you up.”
“So much fake coke,” Olivia Wilde, who plays Devon Finestra, Richie's wife, concurred on the night of the premiere. “I can't believe anyone survived the '70s.”
“It's lactose powder,” said Mick's son, James Jagger, who plays rocker Kip Stevens of The Nasty Bits in the series. “You end up having milky spittle, but [my character] was more of a … [the young Jagger then air-injected an imaginary syringe into his arm].”
“It's a baby lactate formula,” offered Jack Quaid, Dennis's son, who plays an A&R rep, Clark Morelle, in the series. “These guys had to go to shows until 5 a.m., and they took all kinds of drugs to stay awake.”
What Convinced Chanel Iman & Tyson Beckford to Try Vandal?
On the Bowery much later that evening, the TAO Group opened their new international street food and street art-themed restaurant Vandal. “I heard the food is really good here,” Chanel Iman said on her way inside.
Tyson Beckford suggested that the cool invitation had drawn him out, "It looked like a can of spray paint, and then you opened it up, and it was a mixer," he said.
Chopped’s Chris Santos is Vandal’s chef and co-owner. “I did my tour of the Lower East Side,” he said, in regards to his cooking background. His other ventures include Beauty & Essex and Stanton Social.
The walls include art by Shepard Fairey and Hush, a British artist who curated the rest of the pieces. “It's all about street techniques and old-school graffiti,” Hush revealed.
