Looking to tone up for the new year but bored of your same old classes? Trying to stay in shape but always traveling? Meet Obé. You’ve probably seen the brand on Instagram due to its bevy of famous fans. Think Kelly Ripa, Claire Holt, Shanina Shaik, Daphne Oz, Katie Lee, Danielle Bernstein, and Keltie Knight to name a few.
Obé is a premium online fitness experience launched in March 2018 that offers immersive, live workouts through a digital platform and app. Obé has more than 14 live classes per day and a library of 500+ workouts taught by the most sought-after instructors for all levels. All classes are shot at obé’s lightbox in Dumbo—an illuminated studio that changes colors, inspired by artists James Turrell and Dan Flavin, with a nod to 80’s fitness legends Jane Fonda and Richard Simmons. Classes include Strength, Sculpt, Circuit, Dance, HIIT, Yoga, prenatal and postnatal classes, and obé is constantly adding new categories.
We sat down with the founders Mark Mullett and Ashley Mills to talk all things fitness, and making those resolutions stick!
It’s a new year—everyone has so many fitness resolutions! What are your tips for making them stick? FOUNDERS: obé is a premium fitness platform and community made for real life. We like to focus on an attainable and long-term lifestyle, not necessarily on resolutions. The New Year is about becoming your BEST you (not a new you!) and with convenient 28-minute workouts that can be done anywhere and at any time, obé is making it easier than ever to do just that.
We stream 14 LIVE classes daily with over 500+ classes also available on-demand at all times, with class types ranging from HIIT to dance cardio, yoga, sculpt, power, strength, pre/postnatal, and more. obé is designed to meet you wherever you are in your fitness journey. By making the commitment to take just 28 minutes for yourself each day (or just 10 minutes with an express class!), old school resolutions will finally give way to a new lifestyle that will last well into the next new year.
What’s different about streaming workouts? Why do you think they’re on the rise? F: We live in a world where to-do lists have spiraled into five-page memos and the biggest commodities are convenience and time. At-home streaming workouts are efficient and effective (cut that 30-minute drive to the gym or the 10-minute line for the studio shower!) and most importantly, can have the same emotional impact as an IRL class.
Our live classes maintain the same topicality as a studio fitness class (we have fresh content that is updated daily!) while also preserving the same sense of accountability—members can “reserve” their live classes in advance, even syncing them directly to their calendars. The ability to: get in a great sweat sesh, be held accountable via a shout-out from the instructor during a live class, and connect with a like-minded community beyond your immediate zip code (the obé fam is REAL across the US and Canada!) all from the comfort of home is beyond impactful.
What was your inspiration for starting obé? F: As exercise fanatics and former work husband and wife at Hollywood talent agency CAA, we spent most of our time selling programming to a millennial-minded, female consumer and, more importantly, spending hours on end talking about the latest fitness classes we tried. We quickly realized that a large portion of the same demographic we were serving was majorly missing out on the fitness category we were so obsessed with and found it unfair that these premium fitness experiences needed to come with a Park Avenue zip code or price tag. We set out to democratize the boutique fitness experience while continuing to emphasize both accountability and community. obé was soon born in March of 2018.
What’s your favorite workout move or series right now? F: We could never pick favorites, but we’re really into our Restorative Stretch class which is an incredible yoga-meets-meditation class that should be a part of everyone’s weekly routine (so long Sunday scaries!).
What are some of your favorite healthy spots in NYC? F: We love JuicePress, Dr. Smood, Brodo (great for wintertime!), SweetGreen, and we’ve been dying to swing by Nicole Beri’s Bonberi Bodega in the West Village!
