Christmas has come early for New York style setters, as the venerable fur, ready to wear, bridal, and accessories brand J. Mendel has settled into a sprawling flagship on Madison Avenue. Previously located at 723 Madison, the new, 2,475-square-foot shop at 787 Madison more than doubles the selling space, allowing for a much broader product selection, including a made-to-order handbag program and nearly an entire floor devoted to bridal. In fact, the new flagship marks the first time the J.Mendel bridal collection has ever been housed under one roof.
The opening signals a bold new era for the luxury brand, which began its fashion journey in Russia in the 1870s, moving on to Paris in the 1920s, and New York in the '80s. “Madison Avenue holds a strong emotional resonance for me,” says J. Mendel creative director Gilles Mendel. “It’s where I opened my very first store outside of Paris almost 20 years ago, marking the beginning of my personal adventure in the United States at the creative helm of J. Mendel. The new Madison Avenue flagship represents an exciting new chapter for the house, and allows us to offer our clients a far broader selection of products, without sacrificing any of the intimacy."
As for the boutique's layout, ready-to-wear, accessories, and evening collections are downstairs, with bridal and fur up on the top floor. Of course, handbags such as the Matin tote and Midi Bugatti and evening clutches like Minuit and Moonlight (perfect for the holiday season) are prominently displayed. There's even a limited-edition minaudière, called the Madison Moonlight, to celebrate the new shop. Only 18 of these sleek black clutches have been made. 787 Madison Ave., 212-832-5830
