Singer Kelly Rowland dishes on her new partnership with Band-Aid, upcoming album, and her advice for Katy Perry.
Tell me about why you're partnering with Band-Aid, and why you decided to get involved with their "Stick With It" campaign. KELLY ROWLAND: I signed up with the Band-Aid brand for their ‘Stick With It’ campaign. Throughout my career, there have been moments where I’ve been faced with setbacks. I once had a record in my possession that I knew was a hit, but my team didn’t agree. I reached within myself to find the power to "Stick with it" by changing up my team and releasing it anyway—in the end, I had an international hit on my hands with When Love Takes Over. We all have setbacks, we all have things that could, of course, present themselves as challenges, but it’s all about the way you get back up. The way you persevere.
There was an outpouring from fans—when they heard we were chatting—about when you're going to be releasing new music. Is there an album in the works? KR: Yes, absolutely! I’m definitely actually creating an album right now. Someone just asked me about the album this morning and I never like to give a time because everybody just holds you to it and sometimes as an artist you want more time or need more time or something just hasn’t really cooked yet and that’s how I feel for some of the songs like some things have to be rewritten and reproduced and things like that. So, you know, I’m just making sure that it’s perfect for them but they are quite frustrated with me.
But the sound of it will be more dance-inspired? Or are we feeling more rhythm and blues this time around? KR: The foundation is definitely R&B but dance makes its way or a tempo makes it way, like dance, in to a certain records and it’s executed in a really cool way. So I’m very excited to share this album with him.
You're no stranger to singing competitions having done X Factor and now The Voice in Australia. So, I'm wondering what advice you'd give Katy Perry as she heads into her first season of American Idol? KR: I actually think that Katy is going to be awesome because she has this really incredible personality. I think she has a way of rooting people on the way she has through her music. She believes in people and she’s really sweet hearted to her core and I think that she’s going to have fun. She’s gonna bring fun to American Idol. I think that it’s something that she’s going to completely be great at.
