Magna Carta... Holy Grail campaign image by Ari Marcoupolos
Born in Amsterdam and now based in Brooklyn, Marcopoulos first moved to New York in 1979, beginning his artistic career by documenting and photographing street culture: artists, musicians, and skateboarders. He paid his dues by working as Irving Penn's assistant and printing photographs for Andy Warhol.

Jay-Z, shot by Ari Marcopoulos
To align the artwork with the album, Marcopoulos, a photographer and filmmaker, spent four days with Jay-Z. The resulting images are powerful, personal, and specific. See more of Marcopoulos' works at Marlborough Gallery's new space, Marlborough Broome Street, during a pop-up art show opening July 24.

Shot in black-and-white for an effect that's both gritty and intimate, some of Marcopoulos' photos of Jay-Z were on display in Times Square when the album came out on July 9.
