1 - 'Into the Woods' Hits Shakespeare in the Park
Delacorte Theater

Though Into the Woods may not be Shakespeare, the Delacorte Theater in Central Park will tackle the Stephen Sondheim piece this summer in an all-star revival. The musical, which debuted on Broadway in 1986, with Bernadette Peters in the lead role of The Witch, is a hodgepodge of fairy tales like Jack and the Beanstalk, Rapunzel, Little Red Riding Hood, Cinderella, and more. The original production only ran for 50 performances, but Into the Woods is one of the most frequently revived musicals in Broadway history.

Amy Adams, who had her own success in fairy land with the film Enchanted, will play the Baker’s Wife, and Glenn Close will be lending her recognizable voice to play the Giant (whose gigantic foot appears to torment the characters). Previews start today, July 23, with the show opening August 9 and closing August 25. Tickets are free and available for those who queue before a performance, or online at 1 p.m. the day of the performance. For more information, visit shakespeareinthepark.org
