As winter’s bitter cold truly sets in, it’s natural instinct to burrow into our apartments and wait for the warm weather to return. But that’s a little counterproductive to all of those “get healthy” resolutions you just made. Lucky for us, the joy (and heat) of the summer months can be found in these six indoor fitness classes.
You don’t have to wait until summer to set foot on a surfboard again (or try it for the first time!). “Surf” in an East Village factory that seeks to make the experience as real as possible with wave sounds and projected images of the ocean. The custom-made, indoor surfboards create instability, forcing dry surfers to use the same muscles they do when they actually Hang Ten. 64 E. Fourth St., Fourth Fl., 347-566-7873
Pure Yoga’s oasis of light and warmth—think walls covered in vines, soothing natural coloring, and welcoming wooden floors—allow an instant escape from the darkness and cold of the city outside. The studio offers various yoga styles—vinyasa, ashtana, iyengar, and hatha—but try hot yoga to truly warm up. 203 E. 86th St., 212-360-1888; 204 W. 77th St., 212-827-2025
Getting in your swimsuit and enjoying the sunlight is only reserved for summer—unless you have a heated pool under a sky window. The pool at Complete Body Spa boasts floor-to-ceiling windows and a glass rooftop, giving you the chance to catch some rays without getting a chill. The Aqualates class takes the challenge of Pilates into the water, using noodles and paddles as weights. 301 E. 57th S., 5th Fl., 212-777-7703
Remember the fun of bouncing on a trampoline in the summer sun? This chic indoor trampoline class might not give you a tan, but it can most definitely give you a (good!) burn. Bari’s Bounce classes are low-impact but provide tons of cardio burn and toning, as well as a good time. 23 Leonard St., 212-966-2274
Taking a rowboat for a spin in Central Park is a quintessential NYC activity, but, unfortunately, the lovely outdoor pond is iced over for a large chunk of the winter. Row House gives you a full-body, calorie-torching rowing workout and lets you practice for warmer times to come with top-of-the-line instructors and state-of-the-art facilities. 559 W. 59th St., Ground Fl., 212-757-6035; 269 W. 23rd St., 646-850-0540; 406 E. 91st St., 646-850-0540
The heat you feel comes from within at AKT. Their dance-based Happy Hour class channels the energy of an island nightclub with party music that will have your heart-pumping and calories burning. 244 E. 84th St., Fl. 4, 212-858-0305
