Bloomingdale’s style guy Kevin Harter gives Gotham his go-to guide for everything Harlem.
Harter’s favorite neighborhood spots include Central Park, Double Dutch Espresso, Franz James Floral Boutique, and The Cecil.
As vice president of fashion direction at Bloomingdale’s, Kevin Harter is accustomed to tastemaking his way through New York, so we asked him to show us his favorite spots around his home at the historic Graham Court in Harlem. Like most Manhattanites, Harter starts the day with a specially selected cup of Joe. “It’s boring, but I just get the Americano at Double Dutch Espresso (2194 Frederick Douglass Blvd.),” says Harter. “I do often bribe my children with one of their great pastries though.”
Central Park, he says, is “the family hangout—Harlem Meer, the Conservatory Garden, and the great North Woods! “Sushi Inoue (381 Lenox Ave.) is by far my favorite restaurant. It’s worth the wait to sit at the bar and watch the amazing chefs. I love the food at The Cecil (210 W. 118th St.), but it’s the perfect place to just go to the bar and have a cocktail—I recommend the Blood and Fire. “When my sweet tooth gets the best of me, I stop at Make My Cake (121 St. Nicholas Ave.). It’s right across the street, so I often run [over] to grab a box of cupcakes for dessert. I go heavy on the red velvet with nuts on the frosting.
“Since moving to Harlem, I’ve been entertaining at home more. The Winery (257 W. 116th St.) is a boutique wine store, and I usually leave each Saturday with two to three bottles. I always try something new and consistently take home a bottle of Sancerre 2014 Lucien Crochet. “Franz James Floral Boutique (2114 Frederick Douglass Blvd.) is a weekly stop. I have a huge glass vase in the living room, and he creates something on the larger scale every other week for me. It’s almost like a different piece of art each time!”
