Fragrance of the Month
From designer Josie Natori comes Natori ($110), a sexy modern floral that is the perfect extension of the brand, known primarily for its elegant underpinnings. “I grew up with fragrance,” says Natori, who hails from the Philippines, “and really had convictions about what I wanted. I don’t settle.” The scent, which went through 24 modifications before the exacting designer signed off, is built around notes of rose and dark plum, with hints of jasmine, ylangylang and amber, and is also available as a body cream, shower cream and a candle. “Working with Givaudan,” the Swiss perfume giant, “was a delight,” she recalls.
“I know the fragrance business is challenged, but so is everything else,” says Natori, who started her company in 1977 out of her apartment, after having worked as a VP of investment banking at Merrill Lynch. “But when the product is right, it will shine through. This will not be just another fragrance.” Available exclusively at Saks Fifth Avenue, 611 Fifth Ave., 212-753-4000
Best Face Forward
Dermalogica, the skincare brand known for its innovative, irritant-free products, has debuted its second US concept store in Soho. The gallerylike space is equipped with a skin bar offering complimentary “face mapping” by a trained therapist along with MicroZone Treatment Pods ($35) meant for 20-minute, targeted services like extractions and exfoliations. It also offers signature treatments inside the SkinPod (from $110), a futuristic egg-shaped treatment room with customized lighting and music, and all the state-of-the-art gadgets needed to revitalize your skin. 110 Grand St., 212-219- 9800; dermalogicainsoho.com
Feel no qualms about placing your locks in the hands of Ion Studio owners Leonardo Manetti, Pasquale Ferrante and Marco Santini. With extensive editorial and salon experience—and a crack brigade of colorists—the trio is cool, relaxed and firmly in control. (Manetti gave us one of the best cuts we’ve ever had.) Using products from the sustainable line Davines, the salon—trilevel and skylighted—keeps to a solid ecoconscious sensibility. Wind power provides energy, hair clippings are submitted to a company that uses them to help soak up oil spills and uniquely designed recycled pressed-plywood shampoo chairs tilt back… don’t fight them. 41 Wooster St., 212-343-9060
BODY OF EVIDENCE
A brand-new laser brings to light a sleeker you.
The world has been awaiting Better Body Solutions, Dr. Nicholas Ungaro’s chiropractic, pain-relief and nutrition practice. Using the innovative Zerona laser—the only one in Manhattan—the cold laser creates temporary pores in fat cells (only penetrating the fat just below the skin), allowing fat to drain into the body’s lymphatic system and flush out naturally. The treatment requires no invasive procedures and is completely painless— you don’t even feel the laser. Patients choose specific problem areas, and with six 40-minute treatments over two weeks ($2,800) can expect to lose three to five inches—and even as much as nine inches. Dr. Ungaro focuses on total body health and counsels clients on water consumption, nutrition via supplements, organ function and physical activity, guiding them down a path to a healthier lifestyle.
