How has NYFW been for you so far?
MARY ALICE HANEY: It's been amazing. Yesterday was my little boy's sixth birthday and I brought him to New York with me. He went to his first show yesterday, and he ‘loved the music.’
Any trends or shows that have caught your eye so far?
MAH: Loved the sheer cutout dresses from Kaufman Franco. They mirrored what I saw as the biggest trend at Sunday’s Grammys.
And what's your typical NYFW day like?
MAH: Today, I have back-to-back shows, a meeting with ABC, and in between I am going to try and hit Dylan's Candy Bar, and a carriage ride with my son … but usually I always wake up and work out, and get my hair blown out one morning of my trip—usually the first day. I have a great guy here, Mario, who comes to my apartment. Then, it's back-to-back shows and meetings. Because I live in L.A., I always try and pack everything in when I am here. The day always ends with a big, fun dinner somewhere [like] Del Posto or Raoul's. However, last night one of my best friends, Beth Blake, threw a birthday party for my son at her house and I got to see my best friends here and their children!
When you're working with celebrities like LeAnn Rimes, how do you incorporate their personal style with trends?
MAH: I always do tons of research to check out the good and the bad. Styling for me is not a one moment experience. I am working to change my client's career with his or her style. I treat it as a business, without losing the art form. Just as an agent maps out a client’s career, I do the same with their style. I work closely with their team to determine where they need to be in fashion. I only take a very small number of clients. This allows me to help transform them into fashion icons or brands.
Speaking of trends, what have you discovered this week that will shape your own fall wardrobe?
MAH: Lots of leather, ’70s at Marc by Marc Jacobs.
