From a trove of recently found private papers belonging to Marilyn Monroe comes filmmaker Liz Garbus’ new HBO documentary, Love Marilyn, now playing at Film Forum through December 11. Discovered by The Actors Studio director Lee Strasberg, who was a friend of Monroe’s, the papers, consisting of journals, letters, and poems, cover everything from Monroe’s love/hate relationship with fame to her marriage to Joe DiMaggio.
The film consists of readings by famous actresses such as Glenn Close, Hope Davis, Uma Thurman, Marisa Tomei, and Evan Rachel Wood. Interspersed are writings by people who knew Marilyn—Truman Capote, Norman Mailer, Billy Wilder—read by actors like Adrien Brody, Oliver Platt, and Ben Foster. New York Times film critic A.O. Scott called the film “A heady cocktail of journalistic rigor and show business flair . . . just right for its blazingly famous, endlessly enigmatic subject.” See Love Marilyn this Friday, December 7, when Garbus will be at Film Forum to discuss the project. 209 W. Houston St., 212-727-8110
