When it comes to Going Green
, there’s really no argument against taking the plunge. Becoming more ecologically sound saves energy, does away with dangerous chemicals, and reduces the amount of waste and pollutants added to the environment. But it’s not always an easy switch—which is where the consulting firm of Deep Green Living enters the picture.
Founder Susan Short recognized the gap between those who had the best of intentions to go green and those who actually had the time to make it happen, and she set out to help. Determining which chemicals to avoid, what products to use, and exactly how to reduce carbon output requires research, time, and planning. “Our clients are superbusy with their careers, and families and don’t have the time to research and manage a comprehensive greening of their home and office,” says Short, a former naturalist who’s made it her life’s work to help others to live in an ecologi- cally sustainable way.
Deep Green Living, which debuted in 2007, assists with everything from conceiving a healthy nursery to detoxing a home. “Many of our clients are environmentally conscious,” explains Short. “But almost all are moti- vated to safeguard their own health, especially with the mounting body of research about how off-gassing [the evaporation of volatile or noxious chemicals], chemicals in household products, and water quality have such a big effect on one’s health. Parents of small children are very concerned, which is smart, since kids are especially vulnerable to exposure.”
While the firm offers hourly consultations to the architectural trade and small business clients, it also has six different packages available to eco-conscious city dwellers. Each program includes home consultations, a personalized road map for green change, a toolkit of products, and a list of eco-providers.
Deep Green Living’s biggest hit these days is its Baby Well-Being service, which helps new parents locate the best biodegradable diapers, natural baby balms, organic bedding, and nontoxic toys. Looking to reduce carbon out- put and bills? Short has a solution. “We expect our Energy Efficiency service sales to increase now that the economy has hit hard times,” she says. “People are looking to save money.” What better reason to go fully green?
