Jason Pomeranc’s latest hotel venture makes staying in cool again.

As the saying goes, “When a New Yorker is tired of New York, he is tired of life.” Lucky for us, then, that we have cool serial innovators like hotelier Jason Pomeranc to keep us amused and engaged, not to mention housed, fed and liquored up. Pomeranc’s Thompson Hotels group just opened its fifth establishment in Manhattan, an outpost in Tribeca called Smyth Tribeca that takes the idea of the boutique hotel to an entirely new level.
Yabu Pushelberg—internationally celebrated designers to the hip set whose clients include the Four Seasons, The Ritz-Carlton, Carolina Herrera, Tiffany & Co. and Louis Vuitton—were brought in to create not another painfully trendy space but an actual neighborhood hideaway that more closely resembles a gorgeous and comfortable residence. “It’s meant to feel like a home,” says Pomeranc. “At a time like this, we felt warmth and friendliness were most important, that trendy gimmicks are played out.”
This is certainly one luxe home. Yabu Pushelberg, along with architects BBG, amped up the glam factor and created a cozy, romantic, modern interior— a sophisticated take on the old gentlemen’s club. The lobby is broken up into intimate seating areas and features a mix of exquisite custom-made and Brazilian midcentury furnishings layered in rich materials, patterns and textures. Hallways lined in maroon ostrich-embossed leather lead to the 100 contemporary guestrooms, where standard amenities include Kiehl’s products, Frette robes, Dean & Deluca snacks, Kiki de Montparnasse accessories and iPod docking stations. Two oversize penthouse suites with stunning terraces top things off.
Iconic restaurateur Frederick Lesort recently opened French brasserie Jour et Nuit, and the Cellar Cocktail Lounge offers a sexy subterranean refuge. The Tribeca location and elegant design are sure to attract everyone from Wall Streeters and movie execs to the fashion crowd. But what about opening in such a challenging economy? Pomeranc displays that unwavering hometown spirit: “We think long-term.
