Some of the best designer brands out there offer watches perfect for men. Dolce & Gabbana is a line rich with Italian style and infl uence—perfect for guys who like to show off their taste (on a budget). These watches can be had for around $250 to $300. Sophisticated Louis Vuitton offers the square Speedy collection or classic round Tambour series. These Swiss-made watches start at several thousand dollars and range into the tens of thousands for complicated calibers. Or one may want to pull out all the stops and look to a Dior Christal Tourbillon for several hundred thousand dollars (there’s even a $1.3 million version). These specialty pieces are limited editions with handcrafted movements and diamond and sapphire casebacks and bracelets— most certainly an entirely different level.

ALL IN THE WORKS
Carl F. Bucherer gives us something new.

Just over 120 years old, Swiss watch brand Carl F. Bucherer first opened as a watch retailer in Lucerne. Today, under the direction of third-generation family member Jorg G. Bucherer, the company stands for timepieces that are mechanically advanced and boldly alluring. Case in point: the recently released Patravi EvoTec (short for evolutionary technology) DayDate. The watch houses an enhanced version of the brand’s award-winning CFB A1000 caliber, which holds three worldwide patents (for the shock absorption system, the central dual-adjusting system and the peripherally mounted rotor). Three years went into its design and development.

The souped-up CFB A1000 caliber sports a large date and day-of-week display, as well as a seconds subdial at six o’clock, thereby creating the new CFB A1001 caliber. To house the movement, the brand had to create an entirely new case, and the result is the cushion-shaped Patravi EvoTec DayDate. The watch is available in steel ($15,500, PICTURED) or 18-karat rose gold ($37,500). Kaufmann de Suisse, 785 Madison Ave., 877-249-5700; carl-f-bucherer.com.
