Designed in the US and made in Switzerland, Yurman’s Classic collection packs a posh punch

David Yurman has unveiled an all-new men’s watch line. Called the Classic collection, the American-designed series is crafted in the brand’s workshops in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, and utilizes Swiss movement. The Classic marks the first time the brand has offered a round case, and this one integrates Yurman’s signature cable design. There are three initial versions of the Classic, each with an automatic movement and a variety of dial choices. The timepiece was conceived by David Yurman and son Evan Yurman, who is design director of timepieces with the company. “The project was two years in the making,” says Evan. “I wanted to create a watch that could be a platform for future watches.” David Yurman, 729 Madison Avenue, 212-752-4255; davidyurman.com.
For the past three years, Vacheron Constantin has collaborated with the Barbier-Mueller Museum in Geneva to create the Les Masques collection of timepieces. The limited-edition watches, 12 in all, feature precise replicas of masks from ancient cultures around the world. To celebrate the debut of the final four pieces in the collection, Vacheron Constantin is sponsoring an exhibit at The Metropolitan Museum of Art (through September 27) featuring 30 highlights of tribal masks from the Barbier-Mueller’s holdings.
Watches in Vacheron Constantin’s previous Les Masques sets depict masks from Indonesia, China, the Congo, Alaska, Japan and more. The latest issue, sold in a set of four ($412,000) with only 25 sets available worldwide, includes tribal masks from Lombok, China, Gabon and Mexico. A MOMENT IN TIME
The 40th anniversary of the historic moon landing calls for an equally memorable watch.
It has been 40 years since the first manned spaceship landed on the moon. Buzz Aldrin stepped out of Apollo 11 and onto the dusty lunar surface in July of 1969—and strapped to his wrist was an Omega Speedmaster Professional chronograph. To commemorate the anniversary of this historic event, Omega, the only company whose timepieces have been approved by NASA for use on its manned flights, is unveiling a new watch, the limited-edition Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch Apollo 11.
The brand is also debuting a new global ad campaign for the iconic Speedmaster Professional chronograph, which features a photograph of President John F. Kennedy. The connection between Kennedy and the Speedmaster is a natural one. Kennedy was instrumental in promoting America’s space program, and it was during his thousand-odd days in office that America’s first manned space flights took place. On the final two missions in the Mercury program, astronauts Wally Schirra and L. Gordon Cooper wore Omega Speedmasters, and the watch has been part of every NASA manned mission since.
