Models wearing Z Spoke at the launch party

Nearly ten years after founding his eponymous label, Zac Posen knows exactly what he wants to say. “It was time to create the day component, or casual component, of the Zac Posen world,” the designer says of Z Spoke, the line with lower price points that launched in late February exclusively at Saks Fifth Avenue. “I don’t like things that don’t have a strong identity and vision, so I wanted to take my time to defi ne exactly what this new brand would be.”

Posen veers into playful, breezy territory with Z Spoke, which debuted with a 60-piece spring/summer collection consisting of separates and dresses priced from $78 to $675. Standouts include chic little jackets over fl irty frocks or paired with mid-thigh skirts or cropped trousers, all in a cheerful palette rooted in red, navy and emerald. “They’re for the hipster who’s grown up and has to go to work,” Posen notes. “[It’s how she can] still feel cool and be in fashion.”

Partnering with Saks was a strategic decision, he adds: “I didn’t want to be wedged into the contemporary category, which seems so oversaturated to me.” And after a decade of red-carpet glam, how is Posen feeling about this new direction? “It’s exciting to be making clothing that’s not about being challenged artistically, creatively or by price, but [by making] the easiest, most visceral clothing possible.” he says. “[The new line is] also resulting in a really clear direction and communication for both brands. It’s been a great lesson, creating this new message, something fun and different but still a part of me.” 611 Fifth Ave., 212-753-4000; saks.com
