Last summer’s Alexander McQueen “Savage Beauty” exhibit was nothing short of extraordinary. With 661,509 visitors walking the halls of The Costume Institute, it broke records, and it broke our hearts when the legend tragically passed in February 2010, just over a year before his landmark museum show.
The pieces on display were so perfectly curated by Andrew Bolton and Harold Koda, it’s hard to imagine that anything forthcoming will have such an impact. However, I believe “Elsa Schiaparelli and Miuccia Prada: On Fashion,” which opens this May, could possibly be the next groundbreaking exhibit. It will not be in the theatrical nature of the pieces on display—Miuccia Prada is not known for high-drama couture the way McQueen was—but rather the conversations it inspires.
Is fashion art? It is one of the questions that has long been debated by Mrs. Prada. What, then, led to such a grand-scale exhibit in the most prominent of fashion museums, I hope we can in some way answer in the feature “Divine Duality” starting on page 112.
In this issue we also aim to spark conversation on the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the RMS Titanic—a staggering tragedy that took more than 1,300 lives, among them some of our city’s elite. As the events of April 14 are memorialized, we hope you will discover some new piece of the story in our feature “Raising the Titanic” on page 120.
Whether it’s artifacts or advancements, cruise ships or sports cars, fabulous clothing or beautiful blossoms, this city’s museums and parks offer a wealth of treasures this month, just waiting to be explored.
