WHAT GOES AROUND…

For die-hard fashion fans, the current economic climate has alleviated a nagging problem: what to wear. As witnessed at recent high-profile events throughout the city, Gotham’s fashion-forward swans are making a conservative statement: If you’re buying—not borrowing—eveningwear, wear it again. Marchesa designer Georgina Chapman took that dictum to heart, sporting the same much-coveted Chanel spring 2008 runway cardigan to a Cinema Society and IWC-sponsored screening of My Blueberry Nights in April 2008 as she did this May at a party for Kathy Freston’s book Quantum Wellness. Likewise, Natalie Leeds Leventhal wore her black Marc Jacobs dress twice: last November to a Lenox Hill Neighborhood House cocktail party at the Judith Leiber boutique and in March at the Versace- and Leviev-sponsored Museum of the City of New York Winter ball.

But perhaps no one is more the fashion chameleon than Helen Lee Schifter. The fashion plate arrived at an April Cinema Society and Links of London afterparty at Table 8 for The Mysteries of Pittsburgh clad in a white feathered Prada dress, a L.A.M.B. motorcycle jacket, L.A.M.B. clutch and Balenciaga shoes. She had worn the same cocktail number at a Louis Vuitton bash at Capitale in October 2002 (memorably accessorized with a vintage Romeo Gigli bolero sweater, Louboutin heels and a Vuitton patchwork bag). She says it’s one of her favorites, worn at most once a year. “Last time I wore it, I went to Minetta Tavern for a late supper and left a little trail of feathers in the banquette.”
