Upper West Side Celebrity Real Estate News

Even if the West Village has lured many actors in recent years, the Upper West Side remains a favorite perch for Hollywood boldfaced names. Bruce Willis, a longtime resident of the landmark San Remo is moving north on Central Park West to the El Dorado. The 1931 Art Deco building at 90th Street, designed by Emory Roth, is one of the city’s most coveted prewar co-ops, with sweeping park views and even its own half basketball court. Willis’s new three-bedroom, four-bathroom unit, listed for $8.695 million, has plenty of room for the action star; his wife, Emma Heming; their daughter, Mabel Ray; and for Willis’s daughters with ex Demi Moore, when they come to visit. According to the listing, the apartment includes a large windowed eat-in chef’s kitchen, a 38-foot formal gallery “ideal for exhibiting art,” a living room, dining room, and master bedroom that all face the park. Emma and Michael Kerins of Halstead Property (408 Columbus Ave., 212-381-2318) handled the listing.
Meg Ryan, whose blockbuster You’ve Got Mail helped make the Upper West Side famous around the world, has been checking out pricey townhouses with her paramour, John Mellencamp. The pair recently toured an $8.75 million brownstone at 126 West 87th Street represented by Deborah Sabec at Town Residential (239 E. 79th St., 646-532-4906). The residence, which dates to 1888, seems like a Woody Allen movie setting, with 18-foot ceilings, a skylight, and front and back terraces.
Music mogul Lyor Cohen was also seen browsing on the UWS. He’s been looking in some of the area’s famous Art Deco buildings, specifically at a $15.95 million full-floor unit on the 28th floor of The Majestic at 115 Central Park West represented by Noble Black at The Corcoran Group (636 Sixth Ave., 212-444-7926). The 3,800-square-foot apartment has three bedrooms, four-and-a-half baths, great views from the Reservoir to Central Park South, Midtown, and the George Washington Bridge—and a hefty $8,673 monthly maintenance fee. Also included is a vast living room and formal dining room off the windowed chef’s kitchen, large library, and a master bedroom with two en suite baths, including a soaking tub beneath a picture window with views of the park.
Also generating big real estate news on the west side are the Extell Development Company’s buildings that run from the 60s on Riverside Boulevard up to Central Park North. Lara Saget, the artist daughter of actor-comedian Bob Saget, chose a $13.9 million, 6,000-square-foot unit at The Aldyn condo on Riverside Boulevard, a duplex more than spacious enough to display both her works, as well as art by her friend Jing Chen, a Corcoran Group broker (36 E. 12th St., 212-500-7073) who has sold multiple units in the building. The home also has a terrace, double-height ceilings, and open, dramatic Hudson River views.
Homeowners at The Aldyn run the gamut from the merely rich to the mega-famous, including Knicks’ guard Jason Kidd, who paid more than $4 million for a four-bedroom unit there in 2012. Maybe it was the whopping 40,000 square feet of amenities, including an indoor pool, basketball/squash court, climbing wall, and bowling alley in the building that helped seal the deal.
Speaking of New York athletes, two heavy hitters had an eye on the same full-floor apartment. Both Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez visited a $9 million condo at 111 Central Park North. Adam Modlin of The Modlin Group (200 W. 57th St., 212-974-0740) had the listing; neither slugger signed on the dotted line, so the property has been leased as a rental. The owner, developer Rodney Propp, bought and designed it as a gift for his then-wife, Eleanor, in 2007 before the two divorced. The 17th floor, 5,400-square-foot unit has six bedrooms with six-and-a-half bathrooms and 100 feet of terrace. With an oversize family room and eat-in chef’s kitchen, entertaining is easy. The separate bedroom wings have walk-in closets and spa-like baths.
Think of 111 Central Park North as the north side bookend to One57, West 57th Street’s “billionaire’s” building that will be the city’s tallest residential structure when it is completed (432 Park Avenue will eventually top it). Like One57, 111 Central Park North has incredible views. Added bonus—the condo comes with a paparazzi-proof parking garage and is only a 10-minute drive from Yankee Stadium—a convenience Rodriguez and Jeter would be sure to welcome.
