ONE OF THE MOST ubiquitous fashion fixations—the little black dress—retains its status as a wardrobe staple and a measure of design. An essential garment since Coco Chanel coined the term in the 1920s, it’s no wonder that it was the medium of choice for Swarovski’s latest collaboration, which brought together 22 designers from France, Italy and the United States to each design a one-of-a-kind mini masterpiece. Pairing precision-cut crystals from Swarovski Elements and the ingenuity of designers such as Alber Elbaz of Lanvin, Riccardo Tisci of Givenchy, Diane von Furstenberg and Catherine Malandrino, the collection is anything but your basic black. Envision intricate fabrications with delicate embellishments, in styles refl ective of each designer’s aesthetics. Gotham was the first to shoot this momentous collection which, under the patronage of Carla Bruni-Sarkozy and with the support of Phillips de Pury & Company, will be on display September 7–20, culminating in an auction with 100 percent of the proceeds going toward breast cancer research via the American Cancer Society and La Ligue Nationale Contre le Cancer in France.
