Inside the Dash boutique in Soho.
Kourtney and Kim Kardashian in Central Park
Since Kourtney and Kim Kardashian arrived in Manhattan last fall to open their third Dash boutique and film the latest installment of their hit E! Network reality series, Kourtney & Kim Take New York—which premieres January 23—it seems the city has been in a frenzy for all things Kardashian. (The sisters’ new book, Kardashian Konfidential, is available at bookstores citywide.) Throngs of fans and paparazzi staked out the Smyth hotel in Tribeca after photographs of the girls exiting the property first appeared in the tabloids. A black, tinted-window Escalade near their Soho boutique can cause the most posh to perk up and pay attention. Even The New York Times found itself struck by the sisters, reporting on the booming Kardashian brand in its heralded Style section. So how do Kim and Kourtney feel about Manhattan? It appears they are loving us right back.
What made you decide to move to NYC?
KOURTNEY KARDASHIAN: We wanted to open a Dash store in New York. Scott [Disick, Kourtney’s boyfriend] is from New York—his parents live here—so he was beyond excited.
KIM KARDASHIAN: We love it here! We wanted to expand our Dash brand and felt New York was the next best place to open a store.
What’s been your favorite part about living here?
KOURTNEY: I love the energy—the sounds, the lights, the architecture, the museums, the restaurants, the shopping...
KIM: The energy in New York is honestly like none other. I’m such a workaholic; this city fits my nonstop personality.
What’s been the hardest thing to adjust to?
KOURTNEY: Getting around with a baby [son Mason]. Getting a car seat into a taxi is not the easiest thing. At home [in California], we just get in our car and go, though it’s nice that people actually walk here.
Tell us a little more about your new Dash boutique.
KIM: We hope to continue to open Dash stores all across the country. We have our Los Angeles and Miami stores, but New York will be our biggest one yet.
KOURTNEY: The New York location is more upscale than our Miami and LA, stores. We were definitely inspired and now want to revamp the other two locations. We carry Alice + Olivia, Siwy Denim, Wildfox T-shirts, Camilla and Marc, Sass & Bide, Torn, Dolce Vita, Son of John and so many others. It’s important to us to carry a variety of price points so that there’s something for everyone. We also carry products we endorse and believe in such as our Kardashian for Bebe line of clothes, which seems to be a big hit with our customers.
What did you look to for inspiration in designing your location?
KOURTNEY: We were inspired by Soho. The older buildings with the tin ceilings, that rustic feel—we took it and embraced it. Of course we added our own Dash touch.
Away from the store and filming Kourtney & Kim Take New York, what have been some of your favorite places to visit?
KOURTNEY: When I’m with Mason, FAO Schwarz and Serendipity; Bar Piti for lunch; Jeffrey, 25 Park and Barneys to shop; and The Darby to go out.
KIM: I love Lavo, Tao, Greenhouse, Provacateur—there’s such great nightlife in New York.
