3 QUESTIONS WITH…
AS MERCEDES-BENZ Fashion Week kicks up its heels at its new location, the inaugural director of fashion at Lincoln Center, Stephanie Winston Wolkoff, has her work cut out for her. A packed schedule of runway shows, exhibitions, and consumer-based activity in Damrosch Park promises to keep her on her well-heeled toes, though, I have no doubt she’ll carry it off… in style
SAMANTHA YANKS: How will the shows be integrated into the new space?
STEPHANIE WINSTON WOLKOFF: The Lincoln Center campus will become a central character in the evolving story that is fashion in New York. From an updated lobby outfitted with modernized digital signage and expanded services for guests to runway upgrades, this season will be the best and most thoughtfully accommodated in history. Moreover, IMG’s decision to create The Courtyard—a glass-walled, formal tree-filled garden to be used for presentations—brings a bit of Damrosch Park to the heart of the event.
SY: The connection between fashion and the arts is something you feel strongly about.
SWW: Fashion draws in the worlds of art, music and theater. There’s no question that existence of these institutions raises the bar for the designers in this industry, inspiring experienced designers to update their vision, while challenging younger, emerging talent to commit to a level of craft and detail befitting such a rich, iconic setting.
SY: You always look so elegant. Who are your favorite American designers?
SWW: Certain designers routinely craft garments that suit my lifestyle well: Michael Kors, Jason Wu and Vera Wang. I love to mix in pieces by fashion newcomers with more well-known powerhouses; the voice of an emerging designer is so refreshing.
