Skin regenerates faster at night, so letting your skincare routine work overtime while you sleep isn’t lazy, it’s just good sense.

Turns out, there’s more science behind the phrase ‘beauty sleep’ than we thought. According to a recent study out of the University of California Irvine, not only do new skin cells grow faster at night, but collagen production and cell regeneration are also stimulated, giving lots of credo to the colloquial phrase.

Overnight skincare products are specifically formulated to accomplish more in eight hours than your daytime skincare routine. “Nighttime products are developed to encourage the natural skin renewal process,” says celebrity dermatologist Dr. Marko Lens. “Due to the fact that our skin is at rest and there is no exposure to UV light and other environmental aggressors, skin shows a higher rate of renewal.”

Dermatologist and researcher Dr. Diana Howard recommends introducing a retinol-based product to take full advantage of the skin’s natural cell turnover. “Without a doubt, retinol has proven to be the most effective repair ingredient available,” she says. “Working in the dermis and epidermis layers, retinol stimulates skin cell proliferation and increases the thickness of the outermost layer of our skin to visibly improve the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and pigmentation.”

In addition to a retinol, Dr. Lens suggests including a heavier, emollient moisturizer to your evening repertoire. “Overnight products tend to be richer in order to boost skin moisture and replenish lipids that have been lost during the day.”

Go ahead, hit snooze. Your skin will thank you.
