Just as its name implies, Ardbeg Supernova ($170) is a force. The brand’s peatiest offering to date (more than 100 parts per million), Supernova has a commanding presence with aromas of peat, earth, herbs (juniper, elder flower), crushed black pepper, coal tar and even gooseberries. The flavor is equally complex: smoky and salty with hints of chocolate, tobacco and tanned leather, followed by almonds and coffee.

Heaven Hill Distillery, the largest independent family-owned and -operated spirits producer in the US, rolls out the Golden Anniversary Edition ($150)—the third release in its Parker’s Heritage Collection, which honors sixthgeneration master distiller Parker Beam. The 1,500 three-bottle cases feature Parker’s bourbon-blending handiwork, including barrel selections from the ’70s, ’80s, ’90s and aughts, plus a tad from the ’60s.

Introduced for the fi rst time in the US, The Distillery Edition ($59.99) from Glenfiddich is a 102-proof whisky that exhibits characteristics most commonly found in whiskies pulled right from the cask. Matured for 15 years in European and American casks (Oloroso sherry versions included), the spirit has a deep golden color with a light floral aroma backed by vanilla and black pepper and notes of fruit and sherry staves.

Celebrating 100 years of excellence this year, Johnnie Walker Black Label’s limited- edition Centenary Pack ($50)—in a singular, etched black bottle—is blended in the same manner it was in 1909, when the spirit was christened Black Label by the grandsons of John Walker. Up to 40 whiskies aged no less than 12 years make up the blend, which exhibits malt and peat flavors and a gentle smokiness mingled with hints of cedar, dark chocolate and vanilla.
