FROM LEFT: Mollie Battenhouse (LEFT) and Keri Jackson Kunzle; Maslow 6 gets the message across
As far as wine shop Maslow 6 is concerned, the enjoyment of wine should be an adventurous experience filled with interesting people, new discoveries, education and the ultimate acquisition of the vintages you love. Simple? Yes—but often a tall order. Enter Maslow 6, which opened in June last year and quickly won over its Tribeca neighborhood with a rotating, growing selection of interesting wines and a well-versed staff.
“We try to make it very accessible and fun,” says Keri Jackson Kunzle, founding partner and CEO. “We don’t take ourselves too seriously.”
If the name’s riff on psychologist Abraham Maslow’s hierarchy of needs theory isn’t enough to prove a sense of humor, the shop’s clever packages might. With the help of head buyer and wine director Mollie Battenhouse (who is also an advanced sommelier and graduate of the Culinary Institute of America), the “Immersion” involves wine deliveries (monthly, bimonthly, or every three months), tasting notes and food-pairing ecommendations based on a monthly theme, while the “Curated” also includes a private consultation with Battenhouse. The “Maslow 6” is a boxed compilation of a half-dozen wines with categories like “Discovery” (wines from lesserknown regions) and “Cellar” (wines that will improve with age).
The store also adheres to a robust educational component, with seminar topics ranging from the ins and outs of cognac and a class on Champagnes to an upcoming primer on Austrian wines. Sign us up. 211b West Broadway, 212-226-3127; maslow6.com
