Actors Merritt Weaver and Michael Shannon in Uncle Vanya
Annie Baker's new interpretation of Uncle Vanya, which features a bare-bones house for a set and actors in casual, modern dress, has been extended at Soho Rep until August 26. The unique production emphasizes the ordinariness of the characters' struggles and has received critical acclaim for its heartfelt and intimate approach to Anton Chekhov's work. In addition to theater veterans, actor Michael Shannon (last seen in Boardwalk Empire and Revolutionary Road) appears in this production, which is sold-out through July 22. For Chekhov fans, this is one of two opportunities to see Uncle Vanya: The Sydney Theater Company will put on its version, starring Cate Blanchett, as part of the Lincoln Center Festival beginning July 19. 46 Walker St., 212-941-8632
