Masterpiece Murals by Richard Avedon
Large-scale murals of Allen Ginsberg, Andy Warhol and The Factory, and more take up residence at Gagosian.
June 27, 2012

In collaboration with The Richard Avedon Foundation, the Gagosian Gallery will present Richard Avedon's murals and associated portraits through July 27. These murals, created between 1969 and 1971, feature some of Avedon's closest friends, who also happened to be some of the art world's most important players: Allen Ginsberg, Andy Warhol and The Factory, Abbie Hoffman, and more. Sized 20 to 35 feet wide, portraits capture Avedon’s friends and cultural icons at the pinnacle of their influence—during the anti-war, counter-cultural, civil rights movement. There are also smaller, individual portraits of Candy Darling, a transgendered performer in Andy Warhol's Factory, and a rarely seen portrait of Ginsberg with his partner Peter Orlovsky. This intimate exhibit by one of America's most influential photographers is not to be missed. 522 West 21st St., 212-741-1717
