Francesca Woodman was a photographer of immense talent who managed to complete a great deal of work before she committed suicide in 1981 at the age of 22. Her work, which has been steadily gaining popularity over the past few years, thanks to cultish fans and a recent documentary, is currently on exhibit at the Guggenheim. Run, don't walk to the museum—the show closes this Wednesday, the 13th.

The child of artists, Woodman was reared in Colorado and Italy and attended school at the Rhode Island School of Design before settling in New York in 1979. Her prints are very small (she only moved to larger format works at the very end of her life) and Woodman uses herself as a model in most of the photos. Her work will appeal to those interested in portraiture, gender issues, and the nude body. Woodman's photographs fall in line with her mysterious life and untimely demise.
