Sex and the City may be an HBO cult classic and homage to New York, but the title also alludes to an important question: what’s the best way promote safe sex in New York? On Thursday, June 23, New Yorkers looking for answers can head over to La Pomme for the AIDS Service Center’s 7th Annual Safer Sex in the City event. Guests will enjoy cocktails and learn about the importance of HIV testing, knowing one’s status and protecting loved ones.
With National HIV Testing Day in June, the timing couldn’t be more perfect to gather for such an important cause. “This event is designed as an open bar dance party where guests can join us in celebrating sex and sexuality, with a commitment to safety and well-being,” says AIDS Service Center (ASC) executive director Sharen Duke. “Guests can look forward to our dazzling host (Manila Luzon of RuPaul’s Drag Race) as well as go-go dancers and ASC’s own showcase of ‘condom fashion.’” Proceeds from the evening will go directly to the ASC, which builds community, connection and stability for New Yorkers living with and at risk for HIV and AIDS. “The reality is that despite improvements in HIV treatment, there is still no cure for AIDS. We are all at risk and need to practice safer sex and safer drug use.”
The event has already created buzz throughout the city, with participation from the likes of Joy Behar, Margaret Cho and cast members of The Real Housewives of New York City, not to mention John Legend donated the music rights to his song “If You’re Out There.” (6:30 to 10 PM) 37 W. 26th St.
