Derek Lam: Tom Pecheux’s Debut for Estée Lauder
For its New York Fashion Week debut, Estée Lauder tapped veteran makeup artist Tom Pecheux to create the look for Lam’s Fall/Winter 2010 show. Pecheux, whose work has graced multiple Vogue covers and campaigns for luxury brands like Yves Saint Laurent and Gucci, was recently appointed creative makeup director for Estée Lauder. For Lam, he created a smoky blue eye and beige lip that translated into his premiere collection for Lauder, called Blue Dahlia.

Chanel: Living for the City
Not many store reopenings are commemorated with their own makeup collection, but this is Chanel. Peter Marino, the house’s go-to architect since 1999, describes the revamped Soho boutique as “a Chanel gallery: something for the art-going public, for the younger person who thinks luxury is rooted in simplicity.” To mark the occasion, Chanel’s global creative director of makeup, Peter Philips, designed a sevenpiece capsule line called the Soho Story.
“For me, Soho is a place where Bohemian ideals meet the toughness of the city,” says Philips. “I had a specific girl in mind who is both hard and soft.” The kind of girl, apparently, who lives for silvery blue nail color, shimmering pink gloss and highlighting powder embossed with (what else?) 3.1 Phillip Lim: Lisa Butler for Nars Cosmetics
“DISCO-PUNK” is how the designer described the edgy-eye and mattelip look that Butler created for Lim’s show. Using multiple layers of color to perfect the rock ’n’ roll vibe, Butler applied brown-black shadow and plenty of liner while keeping the skin essentially bare, with just a hint of honey pink on the cheeks. But what really made this face modern was the matte lip: not too dry, not too creamy—just a perfectly neutral, shine-free pout.
